2021 has not been an easy year for Michael J Foxand it is that the protagonist of “Back to the future” has suffered several falls and fractures which, together with the Parkinson’s made their daily life difficult.
In interview with PeopleFox said last year he broke a cheek, arm, shoulder, elbow and hand after several falls he suffered as a result of his condition.
“They put in a replacement shoulder and I broke my right arm and then my elbow. I’m 61 and I feel it more and more“, said the actor.
Since 2018, Fox has entered what has been his toughest phase yet with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that has worsened over the past year and is further affecting his mobility.
“Right now one of the last wounds is healing and my arm is fine. Now my aim is not to fall. I use all kinds of tools: whether it’s a walker, a wheelchair, a cane or a guy who puts a belt around my waist to hold me up,” he explained.
The falls became more frequent after he contracted an infection during surgery to repair his broken hand, which caused him to lose his balance as he was unable to use both hands to steady himself.
During a recent encounter with her “Back to the Future” co-star Christopher Lloyd, Fox was energetic and tried to stand and walk without support despite the advanced stage of her illness.
It was, he said, the progress he was able to make after a year of heavy physical and emotional wounds.
Despite the challenges, the actor feels happy and grateful for the life he has, especially for his family, who have always been supportive and there for him.
“It took me a while to realize it wasn’t just me. If I break my arm, I take care of my broken arm. But if you are the person who lives, loves and supports the person with the broken arm, you have to do everything, ”he reflected, while acknowledging the great work of his wife.
Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, just a year after completing the hit ‘Back to the Future’ series. At that time, the Canadian was barely 30 years old.
The actor revealed his condition to the media in 1998 and has since been a renowned activist and figurehead for people with the condition.
