Mexico will develop a taxonomy for sustainable finance

The Mexican government has begun developing a taxonomy to ensure sustainable funding, Undersecretary of the Treasury Gabriel Yorio reported on Wednesday.

This type of funding requires a taxonomy that provides clear guidelines on what is and is not a sustainable project, Yorio said on his Twitter account.

The taxonomy will define 170 activities and will be “the largest in Latin America”, he said.

With 200 experts, the Ministry of Finance will define environmental and social criteria in eight sectors that have been selected for their weight in the economy, their environmental impact and the reduction of emissions, Yorio explained.

With regard to the environment, the sectors of agriculture, energy, manufacturing and construction, transport and waste management will be covered, as well as sustainable cities and gender equality. .

Yorio did not say when the taxonomy will go into effect.

The European Union has had a taxonomy since 2020, which is part of the regulatory evolution of the European Commission to link the financial sector to the achievement of the decarbonization objectives of the European economy. It is also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
