Vigorous war drums sound between Mexico and its business partners United States Yes Canada. The latter two have already begun consultation procedures before a litigation phase after their companies complained that Mexicans were unfairly favoring the interests of state energy companies. The President of Mexico explained in other words why they are asking for explanations.
“I have indications that it has to do with interests that feel hurt because they were engaged in the looting of Mexico”underlined Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of Mexico.
The United States and Canada believe that the legal change that Mexico made last year violates the free trade agreement. Specifically, Washington points to Mexicans revoking permits or not responding to permit requests from foreign companies. They even point out that clean energy is being undermined. The process the partners have opened could ultimately result in punitive tariffs against Mexico, which Mexico doesn’t mind at the moment. Lopez Obrador.
“We have a lot of elements to answer and if it is a political sanction, then we will also defend ourselves”underlined the president of Mexico.
Meanwhile, the Mexican government has expressed its willingness to reach a mutually satisfactory solution, they say, during the consultation phase.
