Mexico plans to send 26,000 agricultural workers to Canada – El Sol de México

This morning, 153 agricultural workers traveled to Canada and with them, more than 2,500 have arrived in recent days in the country of the maple leaf. For the 2023 season, it is expected that there will be 26,000 Mexican day laborers hired by two thousand companies in this country.

Of the 153 workers who made the trip this morning, 15 of them are from the state of Guanajuato, 14 from the state of Mexico; 13 from Veracruz; 12 from Tlaxcala and the same number from Michoacán; from Morelos 11 and 10 from Puebla. Another 21 states report between one and seven workers.

The Temporary Agricultural Worker Program (TAWP) has been in existence for 49 years and has established itself as a model of orderly, regular and safe labor mobility.

“This strength is reflected in sending 20 people who accumulate the highest degree of experience ranging from 20 to 30 years, making trips to Canada,” said Rodrigo Ramírez, head of the National Employment Service (SNE ) of the Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare.

During the farewell to these day laborers at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), the experience of six workers who travel to Canada each year and who are over 28 years old in this program, which has been operating since 1974, was recognized.

It has been reported that in 2022 alone, 375 million Canadian dollars entered the country in the form of remittances from this program.

Marath Bolaños López, Undersecretary for Employment and Labor Mobility of the STPS, recognized the effort of these day laborers who are taking up the great challenge of making this season better than the previous one.

The official hoped that the climatic or sanitary conditions would not become complicated so that at the end of their contract they would return with the satisfaction of a job well done.

He also highlighted the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mexican Embassy in Canada and the consulates, as determinants in improving the working conditions of compatriots in the northern country and in accessing employment options. more and better.

Likewise, he recognized the willingness of commitment on the part of the employers who represent more than two thousand companies participating in the PTAT, which to date have requested approximately 17 thousand workers for this season.

Mexico’s Ambassador to Canada, Carlos Manuel Joaquín González, thanked the opportunity to meet the workers, whom he recognized for their efforts to take advantage of this job opportunity to support their families.

Likewise, he endorsed the commitment of the Mexican government to give full attention to and guarantee the rights of workers:

“We are opening the doors of the embassy so that their human rights are respected and they return home safe and sound.”

Vanessa Calva Ruiz, director general of consular protection and strategic planning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that “at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs we strive to inform them of their rights and to help them in case they have need reliable and safe advice”.

He asked them to go to the Consulate of Mexico, the main door that connects them to the country for the timely exercise of their rights.

Calva Ruíz recalled that last November, in the binational meeting held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was agreed to strengthen the working conditions of Mexican workers for this 2023.

Finally, as part of the modernization processes resulting from the health pandemic, the PTAT has digitized the processes for processing and monitoring workers.

To support it, they have launched a mobile app that will serve as a direct means of contact with workers to report any details or setbacks and quick tracking of their travel process and stay abroad.
