Mercosur and Canada move towards a free trade agreement

Mercosur and Canada have resumed negotiations for a free trade agreement, according to Brazilian government officials.

Although negotiations between the South American bloc – formed by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay – began in 2018, the coronavirus pandemic caused them to freeze and stay in the background.

As Brazilian officials told the CNN Brasil television signal, a team of Canadian negotiators will arrive in the first week of May in the city of Brasilia to begin a new round of talks, the first in more than three years.

The expectation of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is to conclude the treaty in a few months, according to the news agency ANSA.

The idea is that the agreement not only covers the elimination of tariffs on industrial and agricultural products, but also areas such as services, investments, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, intellectual property and public procurement. , among others.

Among the main products exported by Argentina to Canada are unwrought gold, silver and its concentrates, and wine.
