HOLY SUNDAY.- Judoka Orbe Medickson won the bronze medal at the Oceania Senior Pan American Judo Championship which concluded on Sunday in Calgary, Canada.
Del Orbe won Group D by beating Hensley Wood-Waldy Petit-Frere of Haiti, and in the quarterfinals they had Mexico’s Samuel Ayala in the -81 kilo category.
In the semifinals, the Dominican lost to Canadian François Gauthier-Drapeau, who won the gold medal by beating Guilherme Schimidt of Brazil in the final.
Del Orbe, who had the support of Grupo Creso for his participation in the competition, won bronze by beating the Argentinian Agustin Gil, in the repechage. The other bronze went to Adrián Gandía, from Puerto Rico.
Thanks to his performance, Del Orbe improved seven places in the -81 kilo category of the world ranking, where he occupies 25th place with a total of 2,152 in the race to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The championship was organized by the Pan American Judo Confederation (CPJ), in coordination with the Canadian Federation of this discipline, and brought together 170 judokas from 24 countries on two continents.
Medickson’s bronze medal is his second consecutive victory in qualifying events for next year’s Olympics. Last August, he won a silver medal at a Judo Grand Prix, which took place in Zagreb, Croatia.
In the XLVIII Pan American Judo Championship, a total of 14 different events were organized, including seven for women and as many for men.
