Rune stops Auger-Aliassime

Six days after losing the Basel final, 19-year-old Dane Holger Rune revenge has been taken against the Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime, whom he won 6-4, 6-2, and qualified in Paris for his first final of a Masters 1000in which the Serbian Novak Djokovic awaits him.

In addition to the Canadian (n.8), the winner in Stockholm and Munich has already eliminated others in the Paris-Bercy tournament three “top-10”: His Spanish generation colleague Carlos Alcaraz (n.1) -retired due to injury-, the Russian Andrey Rublev (n.9) and the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (n.10).

The Beardless Rune was a hammer and, during the hour and 27 minutes that the match lasted, he punished one of the most in-form players on the circuit, Auger-Aliassime, with 19 winners, aggressive service and an excellent defensive percentage (44%).

“I didn’t let him play from the start,” the Dane said in statements at the foot of the track, dazzled by the bustle of the nearly 15,000 spectators at the Accor Arena.

The Danish prodigy, currently number 18 in the world, is guaranteed to reach the twelfth place. And if he wins this Sunday on the Bercy fast lane, he will reach tenth place in the ATP, and at only 19 years old (he is six days older than Alcaraz).

The 2019 junior Roland Garros winner won this year in Stockholm and Munich, and made the finals in Sofia and Basel. He also made the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, where he lost to Casper Ruud.

“I try not to think about it too much (…) what I have to do is enjoy it,” the shy Rune said in a small voice of his incredible moment of form.
