Major water main rupture causes flooding near Jacques Cartier Bridge in Montreal

Large amounts of water were falling this morning in the streets near the Jacques-Cartier Bridge in Montreal after a major break in a water main.

Images broadcast by Radio-Canada and TVA showed a large jet of water rising into the air and flooding part of René-Lévesque Boulevard and Papineau Street.

The leak began shortly before 6 a.m. at the intersection of René-Lévesque and De Lorimier avenues and continued steadily for approximately 45 minutes later.

Police and firefighters responded to the scene and closed some streets in the area.

In a post on the social network X, firefighters asked the population to avoid the area of ​​Sainte-Catherine Street East and De Lorimier due to “major” flooding.

It is not yet clear what caused the breakup.
