After a good 2022, the athlete from Mar del Plata Leandro Romiglio got his first title squash in the season in Toronto, Canada, he shouted champion of the B&R Open 2023, a PSA Challenger 10 Tournament.
The 32-year-old player from Mar del Plata, currently 58 in the ranking PSA, began the contest played on Canadian soil as the sixth seed. He started with a 3-1 victory (11-5, 11-3, 4-11 and 11-5) against Australian Joseph White (123rd in the world). After this big victory, he qualified for the quarter-finals, where he met one of the candidates, Hong Kong’s Tsz Kwan Lau, 27, currently world number 46 and second seed.
At the end of a very balanced match, the man from Mar del Plata won 3-2 (11-5, 10-12, 11-3, 5-11 and 11-8) and thus registered in the top four of the international competition. Already in the semi-finals Leandro Romiglio won 3-1 (11-5, 8-11, 12-10 and 11-9) to another of the candidates, the American Timothy Brownwellthird seed and current 52 in the world rankings.
Thus, in a new final of the circuit, the experienced Mar del Plata was measured this weekend against the local David Baillargeon, fourth seed and 50th in the world, and with a 3 against 1 with partials 11-9, 11-13, 11-8 and 11-8, he cried champion in Canada.
One of the big goals of the season for Leandro Romiglio will be at the Pan American Games in Chile, which will be held from October 20 to November 5. It should be remembered that last year the man from Mar del Plata represented the country in a remarkable way at the South American Games, winning three medals, two gold medals in men’s singles and men’s team, and one of bronze in mixed doubles with Antonella Falcione, also from Mar del Plata.
