La Jornada – Canada beats Jamaica 2-1 in postponed Nations League match

Kingston. A goal from Stephen Eustaquio five minutes from time allowed Canada to win 2-1 against Jamaica this Saturday in Kingston, in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the Concacaf Nations League.

The Porto midfielder finished low in the 85th minute to seal the victory for the Americans, who took the lead on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Jonathan David (45+1).

THE Reggae Boyz They got a partial tie at 56 thanks to Shamar Nicholson.

The quarter-final match should have been played on Friday, but was postponed after torrential rain flooded the pitch at the National Stadium.

Instead, the match began this Saturday in glorious sunshine, in front of a virtually empty stadium.

Canada took the lead in first-half added time after a period of sustained dominance.

Real Mallorca winger Cyle Larin evaded a defender inside the area and served to Jonathan David, who was unmarked and waiting at the far post to finish.

But Jamaica reacted at the start of the second half after a defensive failure by the Canadians.

Daniel Johnson served a low pass to Nicholson on the edge of the box, and the French striker punished a marking error to score his 11th international goal.

Jamaica’s celebration was briefly interrupted after the goal was disallowed for offside, but VAR corrected the decision after replays showed Nicholson was clearly cleared.

It seemed that the Reggae Boyz They wanted to hold on to the tie, but five minutes from time, Richie Laryea came in from the right and crossed for Eustaquio, who was unforgiving.

The second leg of the quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday in Toronto.
