White House climate envoy John Kerry is in Beijing to resume talks between the United States and China, the world’s two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases, on the climate change crisis. Kerry arrived in Beijing on Sunday as a weather station in western China recorded a record temperature of 52 degrees Celsius. Kerry’s visit came just days after he said the United States would not pay financial compensation to countries affected by the climate change crisis. Kerry made the comment last Thursday after being questioned about it by Florida Republican Congressman Brian Mast during a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing.
Congressman Brian Mast“Do you plan to engage the United States to pay economic compensation for climate change? That is, we have to pay [compensaciones económicas] in another country because it suffered a flood, hurricane, typhoon or forest fire”.
John Kerry: “No, in no case.”
Congressman Brian Mast: “Very good. I’m glad to hear him say that.”
Kerry’s remarks were criticized by several climate change organizations, including the environmental organization 350.org, which said in a statement: “US climate envoy John Kerry’s words are just the latest example of how Kerry and the United States refuse to back up their vague assertions about US support for global climate progress with real and substantial action.
