The president of the United States, Joe Biden offered a message on the immigration system before the trilateral meeting on the occasion of the North American Leaders Summit that he will have in Mexico with his counterparts, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

In this sense, the 80-year-old president announced a new migration strategy to contain the flow of undocumented migrants at the border with Mexico. The United States will allow up to 30,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter each month, but will tighten restrictions on those trying to cross the border with Mexico.

The American politician assured that “these measures will expand and accelerate legal pathways for orderly migration and have new consequences for those who do not use these legal pathways“, he said from the White House this Thursday in a statement to the press in the company of the vice-president, Kamala Harris.

The quota of migrants will be limited to those who have a american sponsorand those who attempt to enter illegally will be deported under the health regulations known as Title 42 and with police intervention, in coordination with Mexico.

Beneficiaries of this measure proposed by the American president establish that accepted migrants will be able to stay legally in the country for a period of two years and will be able to apply for a temporary work authorization valid for the authorized duration of stay.

The Democratic president used his message ahead of his visit to Mexico to announce he will meet in El Paso, Texas on Sunday, his first trip to the southwest border since taking office and which comes as Republicans continue to criticize his approach. to border security.
