Lorenzo Musetti won Italy's first Olympic tennis medal in 100 years on Saturday, with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime for bronze in the men's singles.
When asked by an Italian journalist how he planned to celebrate, Musetti said he would eat pizza.
“I've been eating mostly pasta and chicken for three months,” he said, “so I think eating pizza is the least I can do.”
The other Italian medal in this sport was obtained at the 1924 Games, also in Paris, in bronze and in the men's singles.
Musetti, 22, is currently 16th in the rankings and is enjoying the most successful moment of his career. He reached his first Grand Slam semi-final three weeks ago at Wimbledon, before losing to Novak Djokovic.
“A magnificent moment,” Musetti said when describing his latest results.
Musetti was also eliminated by Djokovic in the Olympic semifinals on Friday, when Auger-Aliassime lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
Auger-Aliassime was trying to win Canada's first individual medal at the Olympics. However, she will leave the Paris Games with a medal, because she won, in a team with Gabriela Dabrowski, bronze in mixed doubles on Friday.
