UNRWA confirms deaths of 102 of its staff in Gaza, highest number in UN history
The United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East (UNRWA) confirmed this Wednesday the death of 102 of its workers due to the bombings recorded since October 7 in the Gaza Strip.
Thus, he stressed that this figure represents the “Highest number of UN aid workers killed in conflict in UN history“, as he pointed out in a message broadcast via his X account, formerly known as Twitter.
This week, UNRWA Commissioner Philippe Lazzarinisaid he was “devastated» for this high number of victims, unprecedented for the UN in conflict contexts. The list includes “parents, teachers, nurses, doctors and support staff.”
“There UNRWA is in mourning, the Palestinians are in mourning, the Israelis are in mourning. To end this tragedy, a humanitarian ceasefire is necessary“said the head of the agency.
The organization reported attacks about several of its installations in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is leading an intense offensive in response to a massive assault launched by Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7. Nearly 1.6 million Gazans have had to leave their homes and among them, more than 740,000 have taken refuge in UNRWA headquarters, including in schools.
