Canada on Wednesday celebrated the cancellation by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc) of Iran’s membership of a committee on women’s rights, in retaliation for social protests that have been going on for decades. months in the country for the worsening of the situation of women’s rights.
Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said Ottawa would not allow Iranian authorities to undermine women’s rights.
“To the people of Iran: the regime is not listening, but we are listening. Together with our partners, we voted to remove Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women,” Joly said via her profile on the social network Twitter.
“Canada will hold the regime accountable. We will not allow it to undermine women’s rights,” added the head of Canadian diplomacy.
Ecosoc on Wednesday approved the cancellation of Iran’s membership in retaliation for the crackdown on protests, according to a decision presented by the US delegation.
“My delegation categorically rejects the resolution approved today. It is based on fictitious allegations against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the Iranian representative explained, adding that the decision undermines the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Iranian authorities have so far executed two people convicted for their role in the protests, drawing criticism from the international community, which has called on Tehran to commute the sentences and end the crackdown on the protests.
