New Delhi.- There India this Wednesday, restrictions on certain categories of Canadian visas were lifted, after having suspended them at the end of September following a bilateral crisis for the assassination of a prominent Sikh leader in Canada.
“After reviewing the security situation, taking into account some of the recent Canadian measures in this regard, it was decided to resume visa services” for a handful of categories, including those for professional or medical reasons, indicated the agency in a press release. The crisis between the two nations began in mid-September, when the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, accused New Delhi of being involved in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soilcitizen of Indian origin and known separatist leader of the Sikh religion.
India, which accuses Nijjar of leading a separatist group seeking to create Khalistan, an independent nation for the Sikh minority in the northern Indian state of Punjab, has rejected the Canadian version.

Trudeau’s accusation triggered a series of reciprocal measures that increased tension between the two countriesstarting with the expulsion of a senior Indian diplomat.
New Delhi copied the measure, ordering the departure of a member of the Canadian embassy from the Asian country, to which it added the freezing of Canadian visas.
Moreover, the India ordered Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the countrygoing so far as to withdraw the immunity of 41 of the 62 diplomats on mission.
Last Friday, Trudeau accused India of violating the Vienna Convention and the Government of Canada has temporarily suspended in-person activities at its consulates in India.
