In the energy consultations of the T-MEC “we are doing well” — Noticias en la Mira con Lourdes Mendoza

The Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostro, assured that in the consultations on the energy issue within the framework of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), the talks “are going well”. He pointed out that the most sensitive issue is the energy law, so Mexico needs to explain how it is applied.

“We need to be clear on the explanation of the law and how they are going to deal with it, the more clear we are the sooner we will publish the questions that the United States and Canada have asked and which led to the consultations on the energy issue. “said Buenrostro.

During his appearance before the Senate of the Republic, on the occasion of the fourth report of the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, he explained that the apparently most delicate question, the law on energy, is however not incompatible with international treaties, because although it is true that in 2021 changes were made to the Energy Law, they are currently before the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation.

The official clarified that the Supreme Court has granted a stay to several sections which are the ones the US and Canada are commenting on, however these sections are not currently being enforced, rather the 2014 Act is being enforced. .

“At the moment, how does the 2014 law apply, let’s say that when it becomes clear to them, we can say that there is nothing to discuss, there is nothing to discuss because there is no 2021 law, but rather a 2014 law. and for that, the only thing they want is transparency because they know and understand that the constitution first regulates any state, any country,” he explained. .

He also assured that “we think we are doing well” because there is a very clear interest from the United States and Canada in reaching a quick resolution because as soon as there is an understanding of how the law works and applies, the offers will improve.
