IDB approves funds for Central America and Dominican Republic after hurricanes

The IDB has authorized a $40 million emergency response for Central American countries and the Dominican Republic after being hit by hurricanes.

The funds will be allocated to help countries affected by hurricanes Julia, Fiona and Lisa, which killed dozens and damaged infrastructure and homes.

The funding, which will be available immediately, includes grants to Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and the Dominican Republic, as well as conditional loans to Nicaragua and El Salvador, and the redirection of funds to the Honduras, according to a statement from the multilateral entity.

According to the Washington DC-based development bank, it has approved six conditional emergency loans in recent years to manage natural disasters and health issues in Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic. , funds that can be activated if necessary. .

In addition to emergency assistance, the IDB runs a resilience program to understand disaster risk, strengthen risk governance, invest in disaster risk reduction for resilience, and improve disaster preparedness.

In October, Hurricane Julia left at least 26 dead and 4 missing in Guatemala and El Salvador.
