The Guatemalan delegationled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mario Búcaro, concluded his participation in the Fifty-second regular period of sessions of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (AEO)in Lima, Peru, where “he reiterated his position on sensitive issues such as sexual diversity and the protection of life”, reported the Ministry of Foreign Relations (minex).
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined the country’s commitment to the fight against corruption, impunity and the strengthening of security and justice. In addition, he recalled the importance of having an OAS electoral observation mission, in the 2023 general election.
In addition to the above, national representatives stressed the importance of creating and maintaining spaces of mutual understanding and communication between States, civil society and other social actors.
24 states have signed a declaration in favor of Ukraine.
Support for Ukraine
During the plenary, the Minister of Foreign Affairs made a statement to express his continued support for the end of the Russian aggression in Ukrainefor and on behalf of 24 States.
In this regard, Guatemala, together with Antigua and Barbuda, with the accompaniment of Canada and the United States, led the discussions to present this declaration, which expresses its “concern over Russia’s indifference and disregard for OAS urgings”, and the request “comply with its international human rights and humanitarian assistance obligations”.
He also reiterated his gratitude to the permanent representative of the interim government of President Juan Guaidó, of Venezuela, before the OAS, considering that since 2019 he has canceled the denunciation of the OAS Charter promoted by the regime of Nicolás Maduro in 2017.
