Port-au-Prince, January 19 (Prensa Latina) Almost a month after the agreement with socio-political platforms and the private sector, and after rumors of defections, the High Council of Transition is now a reality in Haiti and must work together with the government.
The Council of Ministers formalized by decree the structure composed of the businessman Laurent Saint Cyr, who represents the economic sector, while the president of the Protestant Federation, Calixte Fleuridor and the constitutionalist Mirlande Manigat are respectively the spokespersons civil society and political parties.
The High Council of Transition (HTC) has as its main objective to promote dialogue and is called upon to work in close collaboration with the authorities for the major projects of the provisional period, in particular the fight against insecurity, the reform of the constitution and to make choices.
Likewise, they must work to transform justice, change the economy, and advance other agendas such as the rule of law and social and food security.
The decree also indicates that the HCT must guarantee the credibility and integrity of the elections by participating in the selection of the members of the Provisional Electoral Council and by organizing provisional evaluations with recommendations for the development of the electoral process.
Also elect the committee of experts to revise the Constitution and coordinate a political dialogue to broaden the base of governmental consensus among key national actors.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry reached a consensus late last year that will see him stay in power until 2024.
The deal has the endorsement of international organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union, but internally it is receiving widespread criticism and major parties have distanced themselves from the government initiative.
