SANTO DOMINGO.- The government of the Dominican Republic categorically denied on Friday having authorized Canada to set up its office in Dominican territory to come to the aid of the Haitian Police.

The official Dominican position was established in separate statements by Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and the spokesman for the Presidency of the Republic, Homero Figueroa.

“The Dominican government confirms that it has not discussed, agreed or granted any authorization for the installation in our territory of a coordination office for the support of the National Police of Haiti, as indicated by information from Canadian media,” Alvarez tweeted.

For his part, Figueroa also underlined on Twitter: “As spokesperson for President @luisabinader, and as stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, our country has not accepted and will not accept in the future any initiative that affects Dominican sovereignty. Our policy on this matter remains unchanged.”

“For historical reasons, the Dominican Republic cannot participate in any initiative that commits it to direct action in Haiti. We will continue to advocate for the involvement of the international community in a definitive solution,” he added.

The Government of Canada announced on Thursday that it will coordinate international assistance to Haiti, opening an office in the Dominican Republic to serve the National Police of Haiti.
