Toronto (Canada), April 14 (EFE).- The Canadian company Cooke Inc. told Efe on Friday that it expects negotiations with the Spanish bank Abanca to progress in the coming weeks and reach an agreement for the acquisition of a majority stake in New Pescanova.
Cooke Inc.’s public relations director, Claire Ryan, told Efe that “in the coming weeks, Cooke Inc. and Abanca will advance the negotiation process with the aim of reaching an agreement for the acquisition of a majority position in Nueva Pescanova”.
Ryan added that the Canadian company would not comment further on the deal.
On Thursday, Abanca, which owns 97.76% of Nueva Pescanova, issued a statement in which it said it had decided to negotiate exclusively with Cooke Inc. the sale of its 80% stake in the fishing producer.
Abanca’s decision leaves out two other companies that are candidates for the sale of Nueva Pescanova, the American Red Chambers and the Galician Iberconsa.
According to data published by Abanca, the operation values Nueva Pescanova at approximately 800 million euros, ten times the ebitda of Nueva Pescanova in 2021.
Cooke Inc., based in the Canadian province of New Brunswick, is a family business that has become one of the world’s leading seafood producers in recent years.
The company is controlled by the Cooke family and is not publicly traded, so it does not detail its financial results.
