Summer McIntosh He made his big appearance in the world of swimming during the Olympic Games, when at Tokyo 2020 he was very close to the podium at just 14 years old. From there, the Canadian has only confirmed her talent and will arrive at Paris 2024 as one of the big attractions. And with a new world record.
During the qualifications taking place in Canada for the Olympic Games, McIntosh set a new record in the 400 medley by winning with a time of 4:24.38 and thus beats the record that she herself set in 2023 with 4:25.87, in the same Pan American Sports Center in Toronto. “I was really focusing on having fun with the race and going 100 meters at a time because it's quite a mentally challenging race…I wasn't really focused on the timing. I mean, obviously, I’m very grateful that I was able to break my world record,” Summer said after the world record.
“With so many Canadians in the stands, I can feel their support and hear them cheering during my race and it really keeps me going. I mean, if they weren't here, I don't think I would have the 4:25 world record, let alone tonight's. Every time I get the chance to run in front of a big crowd, I think it really gives me a boost. That total adrenaline rush is incredible,” he added.

In these Canadian trials, McIntosh had already won the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:59.06almost three seconds off the time (3:56.08) which had allowed her to reach the world record until the Australian lowered it Ariane Timus at the Fukuoka World Cup with a time of 3:55.38. The 17-year-old also kept the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.69, which was his second personal best and 12th in history.
McIntosh will also be looking to qualify in the 200m medley and 200 butterfly, which he should do comfortably, so he can at least aspire to compete in five events at Paris 2024, to which he could also add a relay. She will not participate in the 800 freestyle, a distance over which the American Katie Ledecky He doesn't seem to have any rivals.
The Toronto-born has accumulated eight World Cup medals in her short career, including four gold (200 fly and 400 medley at Budapest 2022 and Fukuoka 2023), and she will now aim for an Olympic title in Paris.
