The participation of Mexican tennis players in the GDL Open AKRON 2023 has endedl after the elimination of the three Aztec representatives in singles and the one in doubles in the first round.

The first to finish her participation was Isabel Fernández Olivares who lost to the American Hailey Baptiste. The 19-year-old tennis player from Monterrey was eliminated after 59 minutes of the match, losing in two partial sets of 6-1 and 6-2.

This participation was followed by Ana Sofía Sánchez who offered a great battle in the Great Tribune of the Panamerican Center during her duel against the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, but the momentum was not enough and she lost 7-6 (1), 6-4, after almost two hours of play.

Finally, in the Singles categoryRenata Zarazua appeared at AKRON Stadium, which had a beautiful entrance, for her duel against the Canadian Eugénie Bouchard.

In a first set to forget, Zarazua starts the match with a lot of nervousness, losing his serve twice, finding himself at a 0-5 disadvantage, which Bouchard took advantage of to close the first set in just 28 minutes with a 6-1 run.

In the second set, when the stadium was completely ready to support her, Renata recovered from a significant deficit to send the set to a tiebreak. Unfortunately, the cheers weren’t enough for Zarazua and he ended up falling during his presentation.

In the doubles category the news was not better for the local representatives because, in the match between Giuliana Olmos and Luisa Stefani vs. Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Potapova, there was also the defeat of the duo with the Mexican.

The matches were 6-4, 3-6 and 10-7 the definition in the decisive match to decree the elimination of the Mexican and the Brazilian.

In the first set, Kudermetova and Potapova managed to break Stefani’s serve twice, to take the lead, with clear control of the match.

However, for the second set, the people’s support for Giuliana Olmos was essential for the match to be equalized.
