Focus on the environment and human rights: Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola meets her Norwegian counterpart and Amnesty International

Foreign Minister Antonia Urrejola took part today in various activities within the framework of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations taking place in New York.

That day, he met the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Ine Eriksen Søreide, with whom he discussed the great coincidences in environmental matters. Remember that Chile signed a memorandum of understanding with this country in 2021 to establish an ocean dialogue between the two states.

He then spoke with the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, with whom he underlined that Chile counts among its pillars the promotion of human rights as a distinctive axis of its foreign policy. In this sense, the Minister highlighted the great work that the organization is carrying out to fight against violations of the rights of people throughout the world.

Turquoise Diplomacy Promotion
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also accompanied the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, in the High Level Group for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, an initiative led by Norway which aims to promote an ocean protection agenda. Under the theme “Financing Ocean-Based Solutions for People and Planet”, member countries came together to discuss next steps and share their views on the issue.

In this case, the turquoise foreign policy that Chile is carrying out has been highlighted, promoting initiatives to deal with the consequences of climate change, the protection of the ocean and ecosystems, from a perspective of sustainable development.

Chile has been a leader in marine conservation, achieving 43% of its jurisdictional waters under protection, a fundamental tool for ensuring the health of the ocean. It should be noted that our country has promoted the creation of a network of marine protected areas that extends from Canada to Patagonia.

Furthermore, the Chancellor accompanied President Gabriel Boric during bilateral meetings with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz; the President of France, Emmanuel Macron; World Bank President David Malpass and Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley.
