The women’s soccer, basketball and baseball leagues have canceled games scheduled for Wednesday in the northeastern United States due to smoke from wildfires in Canada.
More than 100 million people were under alert in this region of the United States, including cities like New York or Washington, due to unhealthy air levels. The wind carried smoke from the Canadian province of Quebec, the epicenter of the wildfires that are devouring much of Canada.
Faced with this situation, Major League Baseball postponed the game the Yankees were to play in New York against the Chicago Red Sox. The matchup has been moved to Thursday, where the two teams will meet in a doubleheader.
The league also postponed the game in Philadelphia between the host Phillies and the Detroit Tigers due to air quality concerns.
Other sports competitions have taken similar precautionary measures. In New Jersey, Gotham FC’s scheduled game against Orlando Pride in the Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has been postponed to August 9 due to air quality concerns in the New York metropolitan area. .
“The safety of our players, officials and fans is our top priority,” the NWSL said in a statement. “After consultation with NWSL operations and medical personnel, it has been determined that the match cannot be played safely based on the expected air quality index.”
The precautionary measures even affected events to be held indoors, such as the game which was going to oppose the New York Liberty to the Minnesota Lynx of the women’s basketball league (WNBA).
