Elizabeth II dies, last minute live | Charles III of England delivers an address to the nation

‘Clash’ in Spain’s most British town, San Fulgencio

The Spanish town with the highest percentage of registered Britons, San Fulgencio (Alicante), is “in shock” by the death of Elizabeth II and is already preparing acts of condolence and homage in memory of the queen, the first of them two minutes of silence tomorrow at the gates of the town hall, reports EFE.

Located about ten kilometers from the coast between Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura, south of the Valencian Community, in San Fulgencio More Britons live than people born in Spain, about 3,000 (40%) for 2,800, in a census of about 8,000 inhabitants, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The large majority “British” are retirees who reside in single-family homes in the La Marina urbanization, one of the most populated in the southeast of the peninsula, and the enormous weight of this demographic situation is reflected in the fact that it is the the only Spanish town with two UK councilors on the same government team: the councilor for festivals and social affairs, Samantha Hull, 52, from Birmingham, and the councilor for international relations and tourism, Darren Parmenter, a 61-year-old Londoner.

In statements to EFE, Parmenter claimed he feels “broken” and admitted he “cried with Spanish friends even though it was news that we were already waiting for all day”.
