Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly reported this Wednesday that she spoke with her Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez, after Cuban authorities repatriated to Canada the body of a Russian citizen instead of that of of a Canadian who died in March. in Varadero.

Joly pointed out on your social media account who spoke this Wednesday with Rodríguez about the case of Faraj Jarjour, a 68-year-old Canadian who died on March 22 in Varadero following a heart attack.

“We share the greatest concern about the unimaginable situation his family is experiencing,” Joly said, adding that “Canada will continue to help the Jarjour family until the situation is resolved.”

Faraj Jarjour's family reported that Cuban authorities repatriated the body of a Russian citizen 20 years younger than the Canadian.

The deceased's son, Karam Jarjour, told Canadian media that after paying $10,000 for repatriation, they do not know where his father's body is.

Karam Jarjour added that the body received by the family “did not even come from Cuba but from another Caribbean island.”

“I have been waiting for my father's body for a month and I received someone else's. I am very sad about what happened. This is not normal,” Karam Jarjour told Canadian television channel CityNews.

Also in X, the Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs described the incident as “unfortunate” and expressed that his country's authorities were investigating what happened while expressing his “condolences and apologies” to the Canadian's family.
