During a working meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the ratification of Alicia Bárcena Ibarra as head of the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE) was approved.
This proposed profile to join the Mexican diplomatic corps has been recognized by lawmakers in the Upper House for his experience in foreign policy. On this occasion, Senator Ana Lilia Rivera Rivera, President of the Board of Directors, expressed her confidence in the leadership of the diplomat to effectively represent the country before the international community.
Concerning the diplomatic spaces with Europe, he underlined the maturity of the relationship which makes it possible to define and concentrate efforts on shared interests, for which the participation of the Senate will be essential. Regarding the importance of relations with Asian nations, the official mentioned that this continent concentrates a fifth of foreign trade, in addition to having six of the ten most important partners of the country.
On the other hand, Alicia Bárcena recognized that there is an outstanding problem in Africa, which must be addressed, since the territory concentrates more than 1.3 billion inhabitants. It is for this reason that he considered it important to strengthen relations with the nations, as they face significant democratic setbacks.
Responding to questions from senators, Bárcena pointed out that the treatment of the revision of the T-MEC offers opportunities and ways to deal with this issue that will allow to review some important issues on which progress can be made.
