Toronto (Canada), June 10 (EFE).- Canadian political parties agreed this Monday that a commission would investigate whether several of the country's deputies conspired with foreign governments, such as those of China and India, to interfere in Canadian politics, as alleged in a confidential report released last week.
The investigation by the public commission, requested in recent days by opposition parties, is assured after the ruling Liberal Party expressed its support for the measure on Monday.
Last week, a parliamentary committee charged with ensuring the security of Canada's legislative system released a report, based on data provided by Canadian intelligence, which revealed that MPs and senators had collaborated with other countries to s meddling in Canadian politics.
In one of the cited cases, several parliamentarians attempted to influence other parliamentarians on behalf of India while providing confidential information to Indian authorities.
The report was redacted and the names included in the document are unknown. Since its publication, opposition parties have called on the Canadian government to release the names of those involved.
This Monday, the parliamentary leader of the Liberals, Dominic LeBlanc, assured that his party will support a motion from the Bloc Québécois (BQ) asking that the commission which is already studying the interference of other countries in Canada broaden its mandate to investigate parliamentarians .
But LeBlanc stressed that the government cannot reveal to the public the names of parliamentarians accused of conspiring with other governments because that would violate the country's laws.
The commission's investigation, chaired by Judge Marie-Josée Hogue, will be added to that already carried out by the Canadian Mounted Police into other cases of possible foreign interference.
Last month, the commission released a report which revealed that the last two Canadian general elections suffered from interference from several countries, notably China, in 2019 and 2021.
The report also states that the actions of these governments did not determine the outcome of the elections. EFE
