Colombia, Canada and Great Britain give their countries gold at the World Cycling Championships in Cali

Bogotá, Aug 26 (EFE).- Juliana Londoño and Ethan Powell gave Colombia and Canada gold medals at the Junior Track Cycling World Championships in Cali, while Briton Matthew Brennan gave his country a world record in individual pursuit, a mark which also earned him the gold record.

The Colombian Londoño dominated three of the four tests that make up the omnium: elimination, time and points. He finished his job with a second place overall, reaching 148 points.

The home track was above France’s Clémence Chéreau (124), who took silver, and Japan’s Misaki Okamoto (111), who won bronze.

“Since the elimination I was sure the test would be mine, only that I had to finish in the best way. I felt very strong, safe and wanted to have that rainbow jersey,” said Londoño to journalists.

He added: “It was the biggest achievement, a dream I had for this year.”

His first sport was skating, but after winning a few bronze medals, he devoted himself entirely to cycling and put his idea of studying industrial design on hold.

Colombia also won the silver medal in the women’s sprint with Stefany Cuadrado after competing in the final with Elizaveta Solozobova (individual neutral athlete).

Cuadrado beat China’s Yimin Bian in the semi-finals, while Solozobova beat Xuehuang Luo, also from the East, in the other set.

The first gold medal of the day was awarded in the men’s points event, in which Canadian Ethan Powell added 53 points and won the most precious metal medal.

Silver went to Italian Juan David Sierra, with 50, while Danill Kazakov (a neutral individual athlete) reached 41 and the bronze medal.

In the men’s individual pursuit, Britain’s Brennan also set a new world record, with a time of 3.07:092, a figure that earned him the gold medal.

Silver was won by Luca Giaimi and bronze by Vladimir Goncharov (neutral individual athlete).

This new record is in addition to the one achieved at the Alcides Nieto velodrome in which the Chinese women’s and German men’s teams broke the orbital team speed records.
