Circus of the sun will stop for five days in July at the Illunbe bullring, in Donostia, where he will present his last show, OVO, a work in which, thanks to a huge – and metaphorical – magnifying glass, they will focus on these ecosystems that are at our feet. The capital’s economic impulse adviser, Marisol Garmendia, accompanied by the communication manager for this circus, Janie Mallet, and two of the main performers of this production, Svetlana Delous and Jorn DeLaender, They appeared this Monday at the consistory of San Sebastián to unveil the details of OVO crossing the capital of Gipuzkoa between July 19 and 23.
Centered on the acrobatic elements of circus arts, the company offers a show that will delight all members of the household. Its location in the arena corresponds, defended Garmendia, to an attempt to claim the capital as a destination for major cultural events. It is not in vain that the position of the city has deteriorated over the last decade, causing it to stay away from the routes of the main stage and musical tours, for lack of a place of entertainment at the up to the expectations of international promoters.
Cirque du Soleil will land in Illunbe with a show featuring a troupe of a hundred artists from 25 different countries. Of this hundred, more than half, explains Mallet, participate in front of the public on stage.
Dancers, gymnasts, acrobats… They will become tiny to play a colony of insects rich in diversity, to which, unexpectedly, a traveling fly arrives –Jorn De Laender– carrying an egg on its back –Ovo means egg in Portuguese-.
All this will be accompanied by scenography and lighting that will add “warm tones” to the already colorful proposal. “It’s a show about how you adapt to change,” said the communications manager, adding that the Canadian company’s goal with this show and others is to continue to “bringing happiness” to the whole family.
The protection of the environment and the fight against the climate crisis are the main themes of this fair large – and small – dimensions which will bring to the Illunbe arena, among other scenographic elements, a mechanical flower nine meters high. The egg itself – an inflatable element – has dimensions of seven by eight meters. Among the plague of insects that will populate the arenas at the end of July, the public of San Sebastian will also be able to enjoy the incredible leaps of the crickets, as well as the charm of the ladybug or the fireflies.
a special circus
Mallet recalled the main characteristic of his company: it is a circus, but not of animals, but of “human talent”; a special circus The paradox occurs in the particular case of OVO, since the actors have studied the movements of the insects they interpret, taking them as a reference from an “inspiring point of view”. “I want the audience to understand I’m a spider, but in a creative way,” said French-Canadian acrobat Svetlana Delous, adding that the choreographers’ goal of the show, which premiered in Montreal in 2009, was that of transferring the movements of the circus to everything “that happens on our feet”. Delous therefore moves on stage and twists in his web like a red spider, having spent hours and hours watching videos in order to be able to faithfully and, at the same time, artistically translate the sinuosity of the arachnid. The entertainer began learning classical dance and ballet at the age of five, and as she grew older she was bitten by the bug, never better said, for the art of circus, training in Canada.
Before joining Cirque du Soleil – he has performed the role of the Red Spider since 2017 – Delous had a career in major companies in this country. In addition to his role on stage, the acrobat plays an important role behind the scenes. Indeed, it is attached to the artistic direction and is responsible for guiding newcomers to the show and guaranteeing its quality.
