At the beginning of 2009, Chris Jericho began a feud with various historic WWE legends prior to WrestleMania 25. Although it was initially rumored that the Canadian wrestler would face Mickey Rourke, Y2J ended with a fight at a disadvantage against Jimmy Snuka, Roddy Piper and Ricky Steamboat.
However, as sportscaster Dave Meltzer recently revealed, this fight was initially going to be very different, and Chris Jericho caused the inclusion of Ricky Steamboat in the contest. These are his words in Wrestling Observer:
“McMahon picked Roddy Piper, Greg Valentine and Jimmy Snuka as opponents, and Jericho thought it would be a disastrous match for WrestleMania, so he asked McMahon if he could trade valentine for steamship. McMahon agreed and Steamboat ended up saving the game.”
It should be mentioned that Steamboat’s performance at WrestleMania 25 was so positive that the rivalry between Jericho and the Dragon was seen prolonged until the next PPV in Backlash, an event in which the two faced off in a single combat which also received positive reactions.
Curiously, Chris Jericho revealed a few days ago on the podcast crossover of superstars his “Mount Rushmore” of the best fighters of all time, and included Steamboat in this small list:
“I like Shawn Michaels, I like Owen Hart, I like Steamboat Ricky and Hulk Hogan. They were my favorite four growing up, so these would be on my Mount Rushmore to this day.”
Only a few days ago steamship confirmed that will come out of retirement again and will have a new fight next Sunday, November 27 at a Big Time Wrestling promotion event. Therefore, this fall, Steamboat will have another opportunity to surprise again with their form inside the ring, just as they did in 2009.
