Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Alejandro Davidovich won their matches Wednesday at the Canadian Open, being held in Toronto, and will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz and Norway’s Casper Ruud in the round of 16 respectively.
Alcaraz encountered more difficulties than expected against the American Ben Shelton (41), who had eliminated the Spaniard Bernabé Zapata on Tuesday.
Shelton’s powerful serve, which reached 230 kilometers per hour, caused the Spaniard problems on his debut on the court at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.
Alcaraz settled the match in the second set tie-break, leaving the score at 6-3, 7-6(3) after one hour and 38 minutes of play.
The Spaniard later admitted that Shelton’s aggression and power had prevented him from developing his game.
“The first rounds of every tournament are tough, but maybe a bit more today against the type of player I’ve faced. But very happy at the end to be able to take him out and have another chance in the round. next to be a bit better,” he said.
For his part, Davidovich (37) resolved his vote against Alexander Zverev (16) more easily than expected thanks to the many errors of the German, especially in the service.
Davidovich described his victory against Zverev as one of the most important of his career, adding that he capitalized on the German’s mistakes with “very brave, very fast” play.
“I put a lot of pace, a lot of intensity from the first moment and I think that came to him. He didn’t serve very well today, his serve percentage was very low and I took advantage,” he concluded.
Other surprises of the day, the victories of the French Gaël Monfils (276), who easily got rid of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (4), and that of the American Marcos Girón (70) on the Dane Holger Rune (6), and that of the also American Mackenzie McDonald (59) against the Russian Andrey Rublev (7).
