Canadians Svensson and McCulloch qualify for US Open

Two more Canadians will have the chance to win the US Open.

Adam Svensson and debutant Ashton McCulloch qualified for the third main tournament of the year in one of nine qualifying events in North America.

Both Canucks were seeded at the Canadian qualifying site at the Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, Ontario. Monday.

Svensson and McCulloch were two of 66 golfers competing for seven spots at the U.S. Open in the grueling qualifying event in which golfers play two rounds in one day. It is known as “the longest day in golf”.

Svensson finished solo second in the event after shooting straight 65s to finish 12 under par overall. The 30-year-old from Surrey, British Columbia, turned professional in 2015 and has one PGA Tour victory at the 2022 RSM Basic.

McCulloch did enough on Monday to finish solo seventh and take the last available spot. He opened with a 65 in the first round, then shot 68 in the second round to finish at 8 under par and one stroke ahead of two golfers at 7 under par.

The 21-year-old from Kingston, Ontario has yet to turn professional and is a member of the Michigan State Spartans golf team. McCulloch entered the Canadian Open last weekend after winning the 2023 Canadian Rookie Championship and earning an automatic entry. He shot 71-74 in the first two rounds and missed the cut.

With Svensson and McCulloch qualified for the US Open, there will now be seven Canadians in the tournament, as Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Hadwin were already in the field.

The US Open will take place June 6-9 at Pinehurst Golf and Nation Club in North Carolina. The American Wyndham Clark is the defending champion.
