Football at the Paris 2024 Olympics is at the heart of controversy after it was revealed that New Zealand's women's team training sessions were being spied on with drones by the Canadian team.
Initially, the first team coach, Bev Priestmanwas disappointed that some members of the technical staff were responsible for spying and decided to step away from the technical direction of the first match to “maintain the spirit of sportsmanship”. Priestman's decision was supported by his Olympic committee but, now We knew that she too had something to do with it and that it would not be a new practice in her environment.
The twist in the drone spying story
After being supported by the head of the Canadian Olympic Committee and his federation, things took a turn that ended up revealing a scandal within the team that came to Paris to defend the gold. Kevin Blue, director and secretary general of the federation, said that information was known about the use of drones that would demonstrate Priestman's involvement in the scandal.
“Over the past 24 hours, additional information has been brought to our attention regarding the prior use of drones against adversaries in the lead-up to Paris 2024. In light of these new revelations, We have decided to suspend Bev Priestman for the remainder of the Olympic Games and until our recently announced independent external review is completed,” the executive said.
Apparently Priestman had been doing the same thing for several years with various rivals, which would tarnish the merits of a women's team that had caused a sensation by winning the previous Olympics. “There appears to be information that could tarnish the shine of this performance in Tokyo.”said Canadian Olympic Committee chief David Shoemaker.
The case is now in the hands of the FIFA disciplinary committee to clarify the facts and determine the necessary sanctions against the Canadian team coach.
On the other hand, Canada vs. New Zealand and the Olympic champions beat the New Zealanders 2-1.
