MANILA, Philippines — Filipino-Canadian libero Aleiah Torres excelled in several tests during the inaugural PVL Rookie Draft Combine, performing the group's best 50 reps in one-minute push-ups and recording the fastest time in the modified agility test with 5.98. . seconds Tuesday at GameVille Ball Park in Mandaluyong City.

The Brock University product is one of 47 prospects hoping to earn a spot on PVL's 12-team roster during the inaugural rookie draft on July 8 at the Novotel.

Torres, whose parents lived in Cavite and Tarlac before being born and raised in Canada, enlisted in the military with the intention of participating in the growth and emergence of the PVL as one of the best leagues in the country.

“I really enjoy seeing the teams here. The audience is really interesting. “Everyone is always involved when they watch the game,” he said. “I think it’s a lot of fun and being able to play in the Philippines is something very special for me because I have a lot of family here.”

In fact, Torres hopes to meet Filipino MVP Petro Gazz, Brooke Van Sickle, Choco Mucho star Sisi Rondina and fellow Filipino-Canadian Savi Davison of PLDT.

The 5-foot-4 libero, who started playing volleyball at age 12, brings experience from the Canadian championships to the PVL.

“I played club volleyball and then played varsity at Brock. I played for the varsity team there. “We've had a lot of success, we've won three championships, so I hope I can bring my experience, my championship wins and my mentality to the team I join,” Torres said.

However, Torres is tempering his expectations for the upcoming draft. What she can show promise if a team selects her is her athletic ability, consistent defense on the court, and high volleyball IQ.

“I actually didn’t have too many expectations. I came to have fun and play some really good volleyball. “I hope I can contribute to the team I join and experience everything the Philippines has to offer,” he said.

“I think as a libero I can read the game very well, especially from the defensive zone, play defensively and see what my teammates have to do in front of the goal. I'll tell them how many batters they have or how many strikeouts they have, what they have available to them. So, I think I really have a high IQ on the field, good leadership and I think I'm very fast, so I like to chase the ball.
