Canadian Lawmakers Demand Resignation of Lower House Speaker

Tensions erupted this Monday within this legislative body, even after the politician apologized for having invited, recognized and given a standing ovation to a man who had fought for the fascist ranks.

The incident took place during Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s speech last Friday in front of Parliament.

Today, the New Democrats and the Bloc Québécois want Rota to resign, while the Conservatives are attacking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Canadians are tired of a Prime Minister who never takes responsibility for things that happen under his watch. Whether it’s inflation, record interest rates…or constant international embarrassments, he always finds someone else to throw under the bus,” conservative Pierre Poilievre told about the incident.

Rota took full responsibility and apologized for inviting and drawing the House’s attention to Yaroslav Hunka, 98, who fought for the Ukrainian First Division, a volunteer unit under the command of the Nazi Commando , also known as the Galicia Division. Waffen-SS.

After the event, Trudeau called the situation “deeply embarrassing” and said he was considering the impact of what happened on Jewish parliamentarians.

New Democratic Party House Leader Peter Julian called Rota’s actions “unforgivable” and said he had brought the entire House of Commons into “disrepute.”

“Unfortunately, I believe a sacred trust has been broken. It is for this reason, for the good of the institution that is the House of Commons, that I unfortunately say that I do not believe that you can continue to play this role. Unfortunately, I respectfully ask you to step aside,” Julián asked.

Conservative House Leader Andrew Scheer focused his comments on the role and responsibility Trudeau’s office should have had in reviewing any guest list and the message it sends to the rest of the world .

“The Prime Minister failed… There was a Nazi in the room. There was only one entity, only one group that could have done something, that could have reported it,” Scheer said.

Likewise, Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet said that, in his opinion, Rota has lost the confidence of the House and that she should act responsibly and renounce her role.
