The agreement is provisional and does not satisfy the players, who want at least the same payment as the men’s national team receives.
The players of Canada’s national women’s soccer team announced yesterday that reached a tentative salary agreement with the Canadian Soccer Federation, Canada Football.
The players said in a statement that They are “deeply disappointed” that the agreement does not meet all their demands and there are “many important aspects pending in future negotiations with Canada Soccer.”
“We were forced to choose between receiving a fair share of the rewards for our teams’ World Cup successes and our commitment to receive the same salary and treatment as our men’s national team. “It’s a choice we shouldn’t have to make,” they explained.
The agreement guarantees players “at least the same payment” as members of the men’s soccer team receive.
Earlier this year, Canadian players went on strike to protest the discrimination they were experiencing from the Canadian federation in terms of pay and treatment compared to members of the men’s national team.
Footballers have denounced the fact that even though the women’s team is seventh in the world rankings, while the men’s team is 43rd, they receive less money and resources than their teammates.
The deal comes as the women’s team competes at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The players also warned that “it’s not over”.
“We and the Men’s National Team remain committed to finding a long-term solution that provides fair and equal treatment for our national teams, as well as investment in the future of Canadian soccer, but for now, our team wants just focus on football,” they said.
Canada is in second place in Group B of the Women’s World Cup with four points and in its final match of the group stage, it faces Australia, one of the two host teams.
