On the weekend, the Women’s selection soccer Canada announced that they would not take part in training and matches until the federation had resolved the dispute over the reduction of its budget for the preparation of the World Cup in 2024.
However, the players explained that the Canadian association forced them to return to work, since their strike was illegal, so that they could take legal action against them.
“To be clear, we were forced to return on short notice. It is not finished. We will continue to fight for everything we deserve and we will win,” team captain Christine Sinclair wrote on her social media.
The ranking of the women’s team
For this year, the Canadian Soccer Association, decided to cut the budget of the women’s football team, which it did not do with the men’s team. For this reason, the players have decided not to show up for training and not to play in the 2023 SheBelievesCup.
“Canada’s National Women’s Team is outraged and concerned by the news of cuts to Canadian National Team programs for 2023. Our World Cup preparation and success is compromised by the inability to Canada Football to support their national teams.
Despite our historic accomplishments for over a decade, we are told that there is not enough money to adequately fund our youth program and teams. National teams cannot be the only ones fighting for success. It was enough a long time ago. We do not expect or deserve less than to be treated equally.”
To which the Association replied:
“Pay equity for our National Women’s Team is at the heart of our ongoing negotiations with the players. Canada Football will not agree to any deal without her. That’s why, after months of negotiations with our women’s national team players and their legal counsel, Canada Football has already issued a mutually agreed salary arrears.”
There is the support of the manly
In the same statement, the footballers stressed that in the face of such a situation, they have the full support of the men’s team, which responded with another statement.
“We now know that due to financial and other mismanagement, the federation claims that it does not have the necessary funds to provide the players of the women’s team with the working conditions and matches they need to prepare for the World Cup 2023. outrageous and requires immediate action and urgent response“.
