The Canadian government will, effective Tuesday, February 28, 2023, ban federal employees from using the TikTok app on official cell phones for posing an “unacceptable” risk to their privacy and security.
Mona Fortier, president of the Treasury Board of Canada, the public body responsible for overseeing federal public servants, spoke in a statement. He said that from this Tuesday the app will be removed from all official cell phones.
“Users of these devices are also will block app download in future. Following a review of TikTok, Canada’s CIO has determined that it poses an unacceptable level of privacy and security risk,” he said. Fortier justified the decision because the collection of TikTok’s data and input methods “provide extensive access to phone content”.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a press conference on Monday February 27 that if the government is to respect Canadians’ right to freedom of expression, there are also “very important principles on data protection and the safety of citizens”.
“Like many countries around the world, we are carefully considering how to keep Canadians safe online. And the decision is that government teams and workers are better off not having access to TikTok due to concerns about its security,” Trudeau added.
The Canadian Prime Minister also anticipated that other Canadians will consider the risk that TikTok poses to their safety and may take action in this regard. Similarly, Trudeau opened the door for the government to adopt more measures to ensure the security of the official apparatus.
The ban on using TikTok on official Canadian cellphones comes just days after the European Union passed a similar measure. The United States has already banned the use of TikTok on official cell phones in 2022. (EFE)
