Wildfires in Canada force nearly 30,000 people to flee their homes. This weekend, firefighters battled more than 100 active fires in the Alberta region, which has been under a state of emergency since Saturday. To this must be added the two fires that broke out in the neighboring region of British Columbia.

The weather situation is not helping either. On Sunday, the drop in temperatures and a little rain facilitated the work of the emergency services; something that could continue in the next few days. But authorities warn that heat and drought will return; and that strong winds will increase the size of the flames.

“People called this season unprecedented in recent memory because we have so many fires so widespread,” Alberta Wildfire’s Christie Tucker said during a briefing. “It’s been an unusual year.”

Colin Blair, executive director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, said accurate damage reports were not yet available because conditions made it difficult to assess the situation. In the town of Fox Lake, buildings were destroyed, including 20 homes, a police station and a store.
