Canada seeks to resolve energy sector reform with Mexico

On Thursday, Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development said she wanted to address concerns over Mexico’s energy sector reform measures.

“Minister Ng noted Canada’s strong desire to resolve concerns about Mexico’s energy sector reform measures, which were raised during USMCA consultations, and made it clear that Canada could explore other options available to resolve this dispute,” Ottawa said in a statement.

Minister Mary Ng met Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Economy (SE) of Mexico, at the Pacific Alliance Summit hosted by Mexico.

Mexico and Canada discussed Canada’s continued commitment to the Pacific Alliance, recognizing Canada’s 10th anniversary as an observer state and seeking ways to deepen Canada’s relationship with the alliance and the region.

Ng stressed the importance of commercial ties between Canada and Mexico and expressed Canada’s commitment to deepening relations through bilateral initiatives such as the Canada-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue to strengthen relations bilateral business, trade and investment relationships and support inclusive and resilient economic growth. .

Minister Ng shared Canada’s current concerns regarding bilateral relations with Mexico, including investment issues and the regulatory climate in Mexico’s mining and energy sectors.

Finally, he underscored Canada’s desire to resolve concerns regarding Mexico’s energy sector reform measures, which were raised during CUSMA consultations, and clarified that Canada could explore other options available to resolve this dispute.
