The Canadian government has offered physicians around the world who choose to work in their country of residence, because they consider the health sector important, because the most vulnerable population needs it.
In a statement, the Canadian government said it aimed to retain more foreign-trained doctors to help address shortages.
This will make it easier for physicians who have faced complications to access permanent residency through Canada’s flagship programs for skilled workers administered under the Express Entry system, since the “pay-as-you-go” model the act” used in Canada for health professionals is not part of the traditional employer-employee relationship.
Minister Fraser announced that IRCC is exempting physicians, who work on a fee-for-service model with public health authorities, from current requirements.
“This change recognizes the unique employment model used in Canada’s healthcare system and will allow physicians to access Canada’s affordable permanent residency programs. This will mean that more of these physicians who are already here and fill critical vacancies in our health care sector will be able to stay here permanently,” Fraser said.
To help address labor shortages, IRCC is improving its immigration system to allow foreign nationals already in Canada to stay here and work. Immigration is key to helping employers fill hundreds of thousands of job openings across the country.
When our immigration system works well, our economy benefits. We will continue to work with our provincial and territorial partners and stakeholders to help address key labor shortages in the health care sector.
