Canada | More than 100 large fires remain active in the province of Alberta

Local authorities have asked for help from the federal government of Justin Trudeau, who will send the armed forces. This is an unprecedented situation in the country in a particularly hot and dry spring.

About 100 fires continue to burn forests and brush in Alberta, western Canada. 25 of them are still out of control. The premier of this province has asked for help from the federal government of Justin Trudeau, in this unprecedented situation. Danielle Smith warned the fires could continue for months.

Deployment of armed forces

“When I spoke to the Prime Minister today, he told me that the Canadian Armed Forces will be deployed and that it is a question of obtaining the incident command to determine the best way to integrate them into the teams.

In less than a week, more than 400,000 hectares have burned despite the intervention of hundreds of firefighters. Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, settling in reception centers, with friends or relatives. Others fled in their caravans.

Alberta, one of the most important oil-producing regions in the world, is experiencing a particularly hot and dry spring. Rain and milder temperatures are expected which could help contain the fire.
