Still buoyed by the USA’s victory over Jamaica in the women’s 4x100m, the men’s final of the same name has arrived. Emotion in the stands with the powerful team that represented them and which was made up of Christian Coleman, Noah Lyles (gold in 200), Elijah Hall and Marvin Bracy (silver in 100). Everything was ready to end the ninth day of competition with an exaltation of the country of stars and stripes. The expected “USA, USA, USA” chanted by the thousands at the University of Oregon Stadium turned to sighs of disappointment and disbelief as Canada rang the bell.
Two faulty witness changes led by the USA were used perfectly by Canada to claim an unexpected victory in the 4x100m with a mark of 37.48 (the best world championship of the year), seven hundredths better than its neighbors to the south. Coleman failed to pass the post well to Lyles and Hall also struggled to get Bracy into action, who watched helplessly as De Grasse crossed the finish line in front of him. The Canadian quartet, already world champion in Gothenburg 1995 and Athens 1997, thus recovers the world crown… and moreover at home in the United States. The bronze medal went to Great Britain (37.83) who beat Jamaica, a very poor result for the Caribbean.
