About 100 troops have been deployed to each of Canada’s three Atlantic provinces hit by storm Fiona, the government said Monday, also announcing that a navy ship will travel to the most devastated area of ​​Newfoundland, where 76 houses were destroyed or suffered structural damage.

Defense Minister Anita Anand said HMCS Margaret Brooke would carry out checks in four hard-hit communities, adding that additional troops would be sent if needed.

After moving north from the Caribbean as a powerful hurricane, Fiona made landfall before dawn on Saturday as a post-tropical cyclone, hitting Nova Scotia, PEI Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Quebec with hurricane force winds, rain and storm surge.

Fiona swept homes into the sea in a coastal community in Newfoundland, knocking out power for hundreds of thousands of people in eastern Canada.

Anand explained that the troops will help remove fallen trees, restore transport links and do whatever is necessary for as long as necessary.

Fiona is charged with at least five deaths in the Caribbean and one in Canada. Authorities have found the body of a missing 73-year-old woman in Channel-Port Aux Basques, a town on the south coast of Newfoundland.

Gudie Hutchings, the federal lawmaker from the hardest-hit region of Newfoundland, said 76 families had no place to live.

“The images don’t show the complete devastation in this area,” Hutchings said. “It will take a long time for this area to recover.”

In Atlantic Canada, eastern Quebec and southwestern Newfoundland, authorities continue to assess the economic impact of the storm.

And electricity had yet to be restored to 266,000 homes and businesses. At the height of the storm on Saturday, more than 500,000 people were in the dark, including 80% of Nova Scotia Power customers and 90% from Prince Edward Island.

Utility companies have warned it could be several days before power is restored to everyone.
