Sports Writing, April 15 (EFE) for the final phase of the Billie Jean King Cup.
The Slovenian team beat Romania at Sport Park Boniflka in Koper, Romania, in a final-point clash, with Kaja Juvan and Tamara Zidansek triumphing over Irina Bara and Monica Niculescu 4-6, 6-2 and 6 – 4.
Victory for the home pair capped the comeback as the visitors closed Matchday 1 on Friday 0-2 in their favor after winning both games. But Zidansek and Juvan won the singles on Saturday and the doubles on Sunday.
Canada also closed out their victory after Greet Minnen defeated Katherine Sebov and evened out the matchup with Belgium. Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez beat Kirsten Flipkens and Greet Minnen 6-1, 6-2 to lead the Americans into the final.
Thus, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, Spain and the United States ensured their presence in the final of the Billlie Jean King Cup. The nine teams join Switzerland and Australia, finalists of the last edition, to play the final phase from November 7 to 12 in a location yet to be determined. The same as the twelfth team that will complete the list of participants in the final.
The nine losing teams from the qualifying round Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Great Britain, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine will play the rounds with the seven teams that achieved promotion in the different regional events: Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Korea, Hungary, the Netherlands and Sweden.
