Five people were shot dead in a condominium building in suburban Toronto and the 73-year-old shooter was killed by police, authorities said.
York Regional Police Chief James MacSween said one of his officers shot the suspect at a condominium in Vaughan, Ont. Police have not released the names of the victims or the attacker.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, which responds to deaths or serious injuries involving police, said Monday the deceased suspect was 73 years old.
“Horrible scene,” MacSween said Sunday night. “Six deceased. One of them is the subject. The other five are victims.”
One person shot by the suspect was in hospital and expected to survive, the police chief said.
MacSween said he had no details on whether the shooter was a resident of the condo building.
Police evacuated the building, but MacSween said there were no longer any threats to the community. Residents were allowed to return home early Monday.
Mass shootings are rare in Canada, and Toronto has long prided itself on being one of the safest cities in the world.
