AJN Agency.- The White House has welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to suspend controversial plans to overhaul the justice system.
The UK, for its part, also welcomed the delay in reform and called on the parties to reach a “long-term commitment”.
“We welcome this announcement as an opportunity to create additional time and space for engagement,” said Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary.
“A compromise is precisely what we are asking for,” added Jean-Pierre.
The press secretary said that “democratic societies are strengthened by checks and balances, and fundamental changes to a democratic system must be made with the broadest possible base of popular support.”
Meanwhile, UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said in a statement: ‘It is vital that the shared democratic values that underpin the relationship are upheld and that a strong system of checks and balances is maintained. .”
“We urge all parties to find common ground and seek a long-term compromise on this sensitive issue,” Cleverly concluded.
Netanyahu to speak at US-hosted democracy summit
Prime Minister Netanyahu is due to make a virtual appearance at the US State Department’s democracy summit later this week, two US officials told The Times of Israel.
Israel is one of some 120 countries invited to participate in the three-day conference which begins tomorrow. Netanyahu is expected to deliver a pre-recorded speech and participate in a panel on the economic benefits of democratic rule, according to a US official, confirming information from the Israeli daily Haaretz.
During a briefing today, White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby was repeatedly asked if the United States would rescind its invitation to Netanyahu, given the efforts of his administration to reform the Israeli judicial system.
Kirby said he had nothing to say about it.
While retreating democratic countries like Turkey and Hungary have not received invitations, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Brazil have and will have representatives alongside Netanyahu.
